Chalazion, pronounced “kuh-LAY-zee-un, is a small, painless bump on the eyelid that develops when a gland in the eyelid becomes blocked. Chalazia are usually non-cancerous and can occur in people of all ages, although they are more common in adults.
While chalazia are typically harmless, they can sometimes become infected, which can lead to pain, swelling, and redness. In most cases, chalazia will go away on their own within a few weeks or months. However, if a chalazion is causing discomfort or does not go away on its own, it can be treated with medication, injections, or surgery.
